The Church, Steeple and Solar Panel…

Posted on 14th April 2012

England has now got its first “zero carbon church”, which considering being over 900 years old is quite impressive.  The original architect of the St. Michael and All Angels Church in Withington, probably did not think there were going to be solar panels on top of the church!

The church’s environmentally-friendly upgrade has 24 solar modules installed on the roof producing up to 3.12 kilowatts of energy.  The renovation also had a biomass-powered boiler system installed that will now heat the church with no net carbon impact.

Although the church has proven its strength, the installers still had to follow strict regulations when installing the panels to make sure the historic building was kept in order.

The Church of England shows their support by pledging to reduce carbon impact by 80 percent by 2050.  They have over 16,000 churches across the UK, so the potential for change is huge!
